Ministry of Defense Faces Personnel Shortage, Says Acting Minister
Varna, Bulgaria – August 11, 2024 – A major challenge facing the next leadership of the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense will be the severe shortage of personnel, Acting Minister Atanas Zapryanov announced today.
Speaking at the 145th anniversary celebration of the Bulgarian Naval Forces, Zapryanov highlighted the alarming gap between the demand and availability of qualified individuals for the Armed Forces, including the Navy. He stressed that this shortage poses a significant weakness for the country’s military capabilities.
The minister emphasized that while the government is investing heavily in modernizing the armed forces and acquiring expensive equipment, it requires personnel to operate and maintain these advancements. He also expressed concern over the decision to leave vacancies unfilled for cadet positions in higher military schools for the second consecutive year.
Zapryanov acknowledged the dedication and professionalism of the Naval Forces personnel, highlighting their crucial role in ensuring the safety of navigation in the Black Sea. He also announced the upcoming arrival of new multifunctional ships to the fleet in 2025 and 2027, fully equipped with the latest technology.
The ceremony was also addressed by Admiral Emil Eftimov, who emphasized the Navy’s ability to overcome challenges with dignity. He highlighted the impact of the Ukrainian conflict on security and reaffirmed Bulgaria’s commitment to the NATO alliance.
Rear Admiral Kiril Mihailov, commander of the Navy, emphasized the visible results of recent investments in the fleet, which contribute to ensuring security and peace of mind. He expressed pride in the dedication and professionalism of the Naval Forces, highlighting their unwavering commitment to safeguarding Bulgarian maritime sovereignty.
