LIMA, April 21 (Xinhua) – The Judiciary (PJ) of Peru and the Organization of American States (OAS) signed an inter-institutional cooperation agreement to strengthen the Program of Judicial Counselors of the Andean country, reported the Peruvian institution.
The framework agreement was signed by its highest representative, Supreme Judge Javier Vela Arévalo, and by the OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, “in order to guarantee access to justice, as well as promote a culture of peace and equity.” , especially in the most vulnerable sectors, the PJ specified in a statement.
In this way, the OAS, through the Inter-American Program of Judicial Facilitators, will be in charge of providing technical assistance and advice on the execution, training and operation of judicial counselors, as well as institutional support for their local and international recognition.
The purpose of the OAS program is to support member states that need to establish, consolidate, and strengthen projects for alternative solutions to judicial conflicts, and to train their justice operators known as judicial facilitators.
In the case of Peru, some 800 judicial advisors, as well as community leaders distributed in 17 superior courts of justice, provide their services voluntarily and free of charge.
A joint commission, made up of Supreme Judge Janet Tello, on behalf of the Peruvian Judiciary, and María Teresa Mellekamp, ​​on behalf of the OAS, will be in charge of promoting the commitments of the parties, in addition to defining the programs, projects and activities to be carried out.
