The authorities in Peru announced that they have closed 91 ports out of 121 until next Wednesday and that they have placed restrictions on residents’ access to the beaches due to strong waves that hit the northern and central coast of the country.

The restrictions included, in particular, banning cruise ships and fishing boats from leaving any beach or port in the Callao region, near the capital, Lima, where the country’s largest port is located.
The National Emergency Operations Center said on its account on the X platform, “The number of ports closed until January 1, 2025 on the entire coast has risen to 91 ports due to the continuation of abnormal waves.”
The authorities initially announced the closure of 30 ports from Friday to Wednesday because of these exceptional waves that form in the open ocean thousands of kilometers from the coast, making them much more dangerous than normal waves which forms on the beaches as a result of the coast. winds
In Callao, “it was decided to prohibit access to the beaches of Aptao, Santa Rosa, La Arenilla, Cantolao and all other tourist beaches located on the coast of Callao,” as announced by the municipality of the city.
The height of the waves as a result of this phenomenon reached four meters, and it damaged dozens of fishing boats and small facilities near the sea.
Scenes published by local media and pictures posted on social media showed residents fleeing coastal areas after seawater flooded sidewalks and squares.
The Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation of the Peruvian Navy warned about the formation of unusual waves along the coast of the country, ranging in intensity from light to strong.
