On the occasion of Independence Day, the president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, gave a speech in which she stated that she will ask Congress for legislative powers for 120 days to fight crime. Boluarte, who has described the protests as a “threat against democracy”, acknowledged and apologized to the relatives of the civilians, police officers and soldiers who have died since the end of 2022 due to the violent protests.
