In the extraordinary session of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS), in its bid to demand transparency from the Venezuelan government in relation to the recent presidential elections, failed to obtain the required absolute majority, reflecting a deep division among the members of the organization.

During his speech, the foreign minister Peru, Javier Gonzalez Olaecheadid not spare criticism during his speech before the Permanent Council. González Olaechea addressed a forceful speech to the 11 countries that abstained, questioning their lack of commitment to electoral transparency.

“I wish to express my full and unrestricted solidarity with the opposition leaders Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia y Maria Corina Machado“and with the millions of Venezuelans who long to live in freedom, far from the Maduro regime,” said the foreign minister.

The Peruvian foreign minister stressed that the abstention of some countries “is, at its core, a lack of will to express a clear position” on the verification of votes in a process that he considers “fraudulently born.” Visibly annoyed, he added: “Why does Latinobarometer reveal that our citizens, especially the young, are losing faith in politics and democracy? Because they witness these 11 abstentions. Don’t we read the newspapers? Don’t we know that María Corina Machado and Edmundo González, the legitimate president-elect of Venezuela, have been persecuted by the regime’s prosecutor?”

The foreign minister also questioned the urgency of the vote and regretted that no prior debates had been held.

“The entire world and our citizens longed for a free democracy. The principle of the primacy of reality tells us that Edmundo González has, so far, 90% of the votes in his favor. Nicolas Maduro will not be able to justify his victory,” concluded González Olaechea.
