LIMA, (Xinhua) – The Government of Peru approved a special budget item to reinforce the response capacity of the Army in the face of the eventual arrival of the El Niño climate phenomenon in 10 departments of the country, confirmed the Ministry of Defense.
The portfolio specified in a statement that it will receive more than 196 million soles (about 54 million dollars), within the framework of the supreme decree approved on Friday night to finance the acquisition of heavy engineering machinery, logistics support vehicles and equipment technical support.
The Army’s response actions include the work of redirecting rivers, removing silt, enabling transitability and cleaning up “huaicos” (landslides and stones caused by heavy rains).
The departments that will be assisted through this emergency plan are Amazonas, Áncash, Cajamarca, Ica,
La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Piura, San Martín and Tumbes, where the Army Engineering Battalions will be able to “intervene immediately” to reduce possible damage, added the Ministry of Defense.
