Peshawar School Roof Collapse Kills 33 Pupils And Teacher

At least 31 people, including 30 schoolchildren and a female teacher, were killed when the roof of a private school collapsed in Peshawar, Pakistan, on Thursday, October 15, 2026. Emergency services and residents rushed to rescue dozens trapped beneath heavy debris in the city’s Dir district.

Al-Khair School Collapse in Dir District

The disaster struck the private Al-Khair school in Peshawar’s southwest Dir district during the morning hours. Emergency services received alerts at 08:48 local time on Thursday after first-period lessons had just begun. According to Peshawar police chief Mian Saeed, the upper-floor classroom roof gave way, causing a catastrophic chain reaction that brought down ceilings across multiple floors below.

Initial reports from the scene indicated that the collapse affected a two-storey structure, but police later confirmed that classrooms across three floors were brought down. Emergency officials estimated student density at about 30 pupils in the top-floor class, 40 in the middle class, and 45 on the ground floor. First responders from Rescue 1122 deployed 16 ambulances, two disaster response vehicles, and more than 60 personnel to clear the site.

When the Rescue 1122 emergency response teams arrived at the scene, they found that one roof had collapsed on to another, causing the classroom below to be crushed and trapping children inside.

District emergency officer Iftikhar Khan reported that rescue workers successfully pulled out at least 45 children from the wreckage. Mahwish Zaman, a teacher who was injured in the collapse, stated after regaining consciousness in her hospital bed that the school had about 1,200 students enrolled and she was inside her classroom when the roof gave way. Local resident Zahir Hussain described rushing to the scene from a couple of blocks away after seeing people run out onto the street, noting that the narrowness of the street hindered rescue teams from reaching the location quickly.

Hospital Tolls and Survivor Accounts

Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar received the majority of the casualties. Hospital spokesperson Muhammad Asim confirmed that 30 students and a female teacher lost their lives, while official casualty lists recorded a total of 61 people brought to the facility, with 30 individuals discharged after receiving treatment for injuries. Survivors and local residents described frantic scenes as families rushed to the narrow residential street.

Zahir Hussain, who lives near the school, said that apparently first-period classes had just started, the building was overcrowded, and the lesson had barely begun when the collapse occurred.

The tragedy prompted swift government reactions. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow and grief over the loss of lives, extended his condolences to the bereaved families, and prayed for them. In response to the collapse, an official committee was formed including Javid Iqbal, chairman of the Private Schools Regularity Authority, and Muhammad Farooq, deputy secretary of the Elementary and Secondary Education Department, along with a co-opted member.

Structural Overload and Safety Violations

Local authorities and witnesses pointed directly to structural weaknesses and ongoing construction as the primary factors behind the disaster. Police chief Mian Saeed stated that the building was constructed on a temporary basis and utilized substandard roof slabs. He noted that the structure was overloaded and beyond the limit of how much weight it could bear due to active construction on the roof. Witnesses also reported that the narrow residential building was unsuited for use as a crowded educational facility.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow and grief over the loss of lives, extended his condolences to the bereaved families, and prayed for them. The KP governor directed a structural safety audit of educational institutions across the province.

Broader School Safety Concerns Across Pakistan

Building and roof collapses remain frequent across Pakistan, a nation of more than 240 million people, largely due to poor safety standards and shoddy construction materials. The Peshawar incident follows a series of similar fatal structural failures earlier in the year. In July, three girls aged between three and 13 died after a portion of an outer wall collapsed at a government primary school near Umerkot, and in August a couple died following a roof collapse in Shahzad Town, Islamabad, after three days of heavy rainfall. Additionally, 27 people were killed in 2025 during a multi-storey building collapse in Lyari, Karachi.
