The situation with the coronavirus in Russia is currently calm, so the annual press conference of President Vladimir Putin can be held in person, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

“We are now in a relatively calm period from an epidemiological point of view, which allows, subject to the precautionary measures established by Rospotrebnadzor, to hold this event with the president’s full-time presence,” he said in an interview with NTV.

The face-to-face format of the event is more convenient for both the head of state and media representatives, Peskov explained. So, to attend a press conference, journalists will have to pass PCR tests three times, put on masks and maintain social distance.

According to the headquarters on December 22, over the past day, the coronavirus was detected in 25,264 residents of Russia. The indicator has updated at least since October 6 this year. The peak incidence of COVID-19 in the country was recorded on November 6 – 41,335 new cases. Over the entire pandemic, the infection was detected in almost 10.3 million Russians, of which 300,269 died as a result of the disease.

World Health Organization (WHO) Director Tedros Adanom Ghebreyesus said today that the coronavirus pandemic could end next year. He noted that the creation of vaccines against COVID-19 has made a significant contribution to the fight against the spread of infection.

Putin’s annual press conference will begin at 12:00 Moscow time on December 23. The event will take place at the Manege. 500 people will be admitted there – two times less than usual, Peskov said earlier.
