A two-month-old baby died after being attacked by a Siberian husky dog in the municipality of Cota (Cundinamarca). The animal, which belonged to a neighbor of hers, entered the girl’s home and attacked her while she was sleeping.

The facts, for the moment, are the subject of investigation. However, the authorities indicated that the girl’s parents left her alone in her room while they worked near her home, located in a rural area.

“The parents had left early to work. They are low-income people who work in these places where they do activities such as washing vegetables and which is relatively close to the place where they were residing,” explained Colonel Doris Manosalva, commander of the Sabana Norte Special Police Command.

The animal’s bites caused the minor to die minutes after the attack. It was the Police and the CTI of the Prosecutor’s Office who arrived at the place to inspect the body.

The owner of the canine was transferred to the Police inspection and then they will be presented to the Prosecutor’s Office to determine if he has any criminal responsibility for the death of the minor. “The canine is also made available to the competent authority by the National Police,” explained Colonel Manosalva.

It is known that the girl’s parents had to receive medical attention due to the shock caused by the death of their newborn.

On June 27, this time in Bogotá, a pit bull dog attacked three children aged 7, 12 and 16. It caused them serious injuries and they had to be taken to a care center.

“Pet owners of dangerous breeds must have the appropriate protection measures so as not to cause injuries to people who wander on public roads and, in this way, avoid situations that lead to legal proceedings”, has been the insistence of the Police on the so-called special handling dogs.

What are special handling dogs?

The National Security and Coexistence Code established that the owners of dogs considered “potentially dangerous” are responsible for the damage and attacks that the pet may cause to other animals or people.

The standard established that special handling dogs are those that in the past caused death or injury to people or other dogs, those that were trained for attack and defense or those that belong to the so-called strong breeds.
