Born in Montreal on July 28, 1941, Peter Cullen built a career spanning more than six decades across radio, television, and animation. After cutting his teeth as an announcer on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, he stepped into the role that would permanently anchor his name in pop culture history.
In 1984, he voiced Optimus Prime for the animated series The Transformers. He reprised the role in the 1986 animated feature film, a project that killed off the Autobot leader before the character later returned.
Two decades later, director Michael Bay resurrected the property for a live-action blockbuster. Producers brought back Cullen to anchor the 2007 Paramount Pictures film. Cullen went on to voice the Autobot leader across sequels, including Dark of the Moon and Age of Extinction, all the way to the 2023 installment Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
The Marine Corps Brother Who Shaped the Voice of Optimus Prime
When Cullen originally auditioned for the animated series in the 1980s, he had little idea what the project was, recalling that producers simply told him he was a hero, and that was a truck. Before heading to the microphone, he sought inspiration from his brother Larry, a former captain in the Marine Corps.
Peter Cullen recalled via USA TODAY that one morning when he was on his way to the audition, his brother asked him where he was going, and he told him he was about to audition for a hero that was a truck. He added that his brother laughed and he laughed too, because he had no idea what he was getting into, and that his brother told him not to be a Hollywood hero or one of those loudmouths yelling and screaming and pretending, but rather a real hero who could be strong enough to be gentle and understanding. He noted that it was the character of a Marine who was talking, and since his brother’s timbre was very similar to his own to begin with, it was easy to impersonate him, making the tone his brother gave him to set the audition perfect.
That advice formed the philosophical bedrock of the character. It also inspired the final valediction delivered by his family after his passing, asking fans to be strong enough to be gentle while serving their communities with compassion, integrity, and loyalty

Beyond Cybertron: Eeyore, Predator, and a Six-Decade Career
While Optimus Prime remained his signature achievement, Cullen’s vocal footprint extended across dozens of iconic franchises and children’s media staples. He became the voice of Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh projects.
His range crossed genres into action and sci-fi. He provided the vocal effects for the Predator in 1987’s Predator, voiced Monterey Jack in Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, played the villainous prototype car K.A.R.R. in Knight Rider.
