Peter Dobing Dies At 87: Stoke City Legend Remembered

Peter Dobing, the skilful inside right who captained Stoke City to their sole major trophy and earned renown as the pipe-smoking gentleman of English football, has died at the age of 87.

Born in Manchester on December 1 1938, Dobing carried himself with an unhurried dignity that seemed to belong to another era. While opponents prepared for battle, he arrived at training wearing a tweed suit, shirt, tie, and brown brogues, often with a trilby hat, and would regularly clinch a pipe between his teeth. Yet beneath that quiet exterior lay a formidable and incisive footballer who played across three decades of professional sport.

From Blackburn Promotons to a Record Move at Stoke City

Dobing began his professional journey when he signed with Blackburn Rovers at just 16 in December 1955, making his debut the following year against Bristol City. He quickly blossomed into a prolific inside forward at Ewood Park, netting 20 goals to help fire Rovers to promotion to the First Division in 1957–58, before reaching a career-best 24 goals the following campaign.

His early career included a run to the 1960 FA Cup final with Blackburn, where he scored five times during the tournament only for his side to fall 3-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Wembley. In 1961, Manchester City paid £37,500 to bring him to Maine Road as a direct successor to Denis Law. Following City’s relegation in 1963, his father phoned Stoke City manager Tony Waddington to let him know the forward was available. Stoke broke their club transfer record to sign him for £38,000.

Lifting the League Cup Under Tony Waddington

Under Waddington—who famously described football as the working man’s ballet—Dobing found his true footballing home. Repositioned into midfield alongside George Eastham, his acceleration and intelligent passing became the heartbeat of Stoke’s attack. The pinnacle of his career arrived on March 4, 1972, when he led Stoke City out at Wembley as captain, defeating Chelsea 2-1 to claim the League Cup.

The road to Wembley had tested the squad’s resilience. Stoke played away in every single round, requiring two replays to get past Manchester United and four matches—including a two-legged semi-final and two replays—to overcome West Ham United, where Dobing scored the decisive goal.

Life Beyond the Pitch and Retirement From Professional Play

Despite his enduring legacy on the pitch, Dobing was never entirely consumed by the sport. In August 1967, he briefly threatened to quit football altogether when Manchester United sought to sign him, a move Stoke blocked. When the club later fell short of providing a promised testimonial to mark his 10 years of service, Dobing recalled that When the time came, Stoke simply told me they could not afford it.

A second career-ending broken leg in 1973 finally drew the curtain on 17 years of professional play, during which he amassed 576 league appearances and 208 goals. In retirement, he ran a pottery business supplying crockery to hotels and restaurants while dedicating his time to fishing for trout and salmon.

His passion for life was fishing. If we went out for a few beers, Peter would go home to watch a programme about fishing or read a book about it. He thought himself a good footballer but a better fisherman.
