(ANSA) – TRIESTE, APRIL 10 – “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Peter Higgs, a monumental figure in the world of theoretical physics“. This is the content of a note released by Sissa of Trieste, following the death of the scientist.
In addition to the “pioneering work on the Higgs mechanism which has forever changed our understanding of the fundamental forces of nature, culminating in the experimental confirmation of the boson”, the press release recalls that in September 2013, a month before the Nobel Prize, Sissa ” had the honor of awarding Professor Higgs a PhD Honoris Causa in Theoretical Particle Physics recognizing his unparalleled contributions to science.”
Higgs was unable to attend the ceremony for health reasons and the awards were presented to Guido Tonelli, celebrated for his role in the CMS experiment and recipient of the 2013 Enrico Fermi Award from the Italian Physical Society (Sif), together with Anna Di Ciaccio , representative of the Atlas experiment at the LHC.
