WAIKOLOA, Hawaii – Peter N. Slack, president and CEO of the Wyanoke Group, received the prestigious Lindstrom Leadership award and Lecture at Hawaiian Eye 2026 on January 17-23. The award acknowledges Slack’s pivotal role in fostering education, communication, and collaboration within the ophthalmology community.
Vance Thompson, MD, presented the award alongside David F. Chang,MD,emphasizing that Slack’s leadership has been “instrumental” in shaping the landscape of ophthalmological advancement. Thompson highlighted the Slack family’s enduring dedication to healthcare education, spanning four generations.
Slack’s journey began in 1986 when he assumed the presidency of Slack Incorporated from his father, Charles B. Slack. This transition marked a strategic shift from book publishing to a focus on medical education and communications. “This diversification into creating world class meetings was huge,” Thompson said. “Under his continued leadership, Ocular Surgery news, Primary Care Optometry News, and so much more, were created.”
A key moment in Slack’s career was the 1993 acquisition of Hawaiian Eye meeting, formerly known as the Royal Hawaiian Eye meeting. This was followed by the launch of Vindico Medical Education in 2005 and Healio in 2012, further solidifying the company’s position as a leading provider of medical details and educational resources.
During the acceptance speech, Slack pinpointed two defining moments: the acquisition of Hawaiian Eye from John M. Corboy, MD, and the arrival of Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, as Chief Medical Editor of OSN. “The rest has just been incredible,” Slack stated. “I don’t know where we would be without Dick. He is our leader, our mentor and our ambassador.”
The Lindstrom Leadership Award was established to honor Dr. Lindstrom’s significant contributions to ophthalmology and his more than 40 years of service with OSN. Previous recipients include William J. Link, PhD (2022), Jim mazzo (2023), J. Andy Corley (2024), and David Karcher (2025).
