The number of people who agreed to the National Assembly’s petition to expel Rep. Chung Cheong-rae of the Democratic Party, the chairman of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, from his position as a member of the National Assembly has exceeded 50,000, meeting the requirement for referral to the relevant standing committee. In response, Chairman Chung said, “I also wholeheartedly support the ‘Chung Cheong-rae hearing,’” and pressured the government and the ruling party by saying, “You should also respond to the impeachment hearing of President Yoon Seok-yeol and the impeachment hearing of the prosecutors.”

According to the National Assembly Secretariat on the 22nd, over 58,000 people have agreed to the petition requesting the expulsion of Chairman Chung, which was posted on the National Assembly’s National Petition website on the 18th. The petitioner wrote, “(Chairman Chung) is driving the Legislative and Judiciary Committee into chaos, forgetting the dignity that the National Assembly should have, using abusive language and threats,” and “I am petitioning for (Chairman Chung’s) expulsion.”

In relation to this, Chairman Chung responded on Facebook, “If the petition to dismiss the chairman of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee is legally referred to the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, a hearing will also be held for this,” and “I hope you will cooperate with the impeachment hearing of President Yoon and the impeachment hearing of the prosecutors without causing a fuss.” He added, “The witnesses who were accepted as witnesses for the impeachment hearing of President Yoon to be held on the 26th, including the President’s wife Kim Keon-hee, the President’s mother-in-law Choi Eun-soon, and the Prosecutor General Lee Won-seok, should all appear.”

In the political world, there are criticisms that the National Assembly National Petition has become a battleground between the camps as the Democratic Party began hearings on the petition for the impeachment of President Yoon. As of this day, among the petitions received on the petition homepage, there are a total of four petitions that have met the requirements for referral to the standing committee, including the petition for the expulsion of Rep. Jeong. The petition against the impeachment of President Yoon has exceeded 105,000 signatures, and 53,000 signatures have also signed the petition for the adoption of a resolution calling for the Democratic Party to request a party dissolution. In response, over 51,000 signatures have also signed the petition for the impeachment of Minister of National Defense Shin Won-sik, submitted by the progressive camp.
