This Saturday, President Gustavo Petro launched a serious accusation during his visit to San José del Guaviare, where he closed the tour ‘We Save the Jungle: Conserve Pays’. In the middle of the event, the president assured that there is a plan to assassinate him in the next three months, allegedly orchestrated by alias Iván Mordisco, commander of the Central Staff (EMC) of the FARC dissidents. Petro not only mentioned the plot, but also claimed to have evidence to support his accusation and promised to present it before December.

“We have a so-called revolutionary allied with Mexican mafias, Colombian smugglers, emerald dealers and corrupt politicians, financing the murder operation. And it is proven. One day I will show the proof. Not in three years, but before December, because that is the deadline that he and the most corrupt politicians in Colombia have given themselves,” said Petro in his speech to the community and the media.

Previous complaints and context of the conflict

This is not the first time that President Petro has mentioned an alleged assassination plan. In July of this year, during the commemoration of Independence Day, the president arrived late to official events, citing an alert of an attack against him. On that occasion he also pointed to alias ‘Iván Mordisco’ as one of the masterminds behind the threat.

Although Petro has insisted on the seriousness of these accusations, concrete evidence has not yet been presented. The Attorney General’s Office, for its part, is waiting for the head of state to substantiate his accusation, while police and military authorities have not found clear evidence confirming the alleged assassination attempt.

Alias ’Iván Mordisco’ and the EMC of the FARC dissidents

‘Iván Mordisco’ has been a priority target for the Petro government, especially after the ceasefire with the EMC dissidents was broken. The attacks perpetrated by this armed group in the department of Cauca, where the civilian population has been severely affected, led the president to order a military offensive against the dissidents under the command of Mordisco.

The armed conflict with dissident groups, and in particular with the Central General Staff, has been one of the biggest challenges for the Petro government in its attempt to carry out a policy of total peace. Despite efforts to establish dialogue with some armed groups, the constant attacks against the civilian population have undermined the possibility of moving forward on an agreement, which has caused an escalation of violence in several regions of the country.

Expectation for the tests

The president’s promise to present evidence before December has generated expectations both among citizens and in state institutions. If the accusations are true, we would be facing a large-scale case that would involve an alliance between FARC dissidents, international mafias and corrupt sectors of Colombian politics.

However, the lack of evidence so far has sparked criticism from some sectors that demand greater clarity and responsibility in the accusations. The public is attentive to what happens in the coming months, while the Prosecutor’s Office, the security forces and the media await the presentation of the evidence announced by President Petro.

The situation remains delicate, and the threat against the president’s life, if confirmed, could radically change the political and security landscape in Colombia.
