This Monday, the Casa de Nariño opened its doors to present the new Gabriel García Márquez Room, a tribute to the Nobel Prize winner in Literature and one of the most prominent figures in Colombian and world literature.
The inauguration was held with the aim of allowing both distinguished visitors and the general public to immerse themselves in the life and work of the writer.
Located on the first floor of the presidential palace and next to the Plaza de Armasthe room is designed to be an essential stop on the guided tour of the Casa de Nariño. The strategic location allows easy and privileged access, fulfilling the vision of President Gustavo Petro, who emphasized: “Let every corner of the Casa de Nariño tell a story of what Colombia is, in all its cultural and regional variety”.

After four months of work on its design and preparation, the Presidency of the Republic, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Knowledge, presented this space dedicated to the memory of García Márquez. The collection of the room, partly loaned by the National Museum, includes a permanent exhibition with photographs of the author at different moments of his life, from his childhood in Aracataca to his consecration in Stockholm with the Nobel Prize.
The room offers a timeline that traces the biography of ‘Gabo’covering his childhood in Magdalena, his school years in Zipaquirá, his exile in Mexico, his career as a reporter and his literary consecration. In addition, twenty different editions of “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” his most emblematic work, are on display, along with a portrait of the Nobel laureate by indigenous artist Carlos Jacanamijoy. Visitors can also listen to audios and readings by García Márquez himself, immersing themselves in his voice and unique narrative.
The design of the space, measuring 52 square meters, was the work of the Tangrama studio.led by architect José Roberto Bermúdez. The curatorship was in charge of the National Library and historian Nicolás Pernett, who have achieved an impeccable and enriching presentation of García Márquez’s legacy.
Among the treasures on display, visitors will find a facsimile of some of ‘Gabo’s’ articles in the newspaper El Espectador and a copy of the first issue of the iconic magazine Alternativa, which marked a milestone in the dissemination of leftist ideas in the country and featured the collaboration of renowned journalists such as Antonio Caballero.
