Braskem mine collapsed on December 10th

The Federal Police carried out an operation this Thursday morning (21) against the mining company Braskem, responsible for the rock salt mine in Maceió (AL). Investigators are investigating alleged sending of false information about the situation of the mine, in addition to non-compliance with security measures.

In total, 14 search and seizure warrants were executed in Maceió, Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and Aracaju (SE). One person was taken to the police station to give a statement.

Employees of the mining company in the capital of Alagoas were prevented from entering the company during the operation. There is still no information about the release of the site until the last update of this report.

contacted the company, but did not receive a response.

Braskem is responsible for 35 rock salt mines in the Bebedouro region, in Maceió. The site was explored by the mining company between the years 1970 and 2019.

The risk of the mine sinking caused the displacement of more than 60 thousand people from the region. Five neighborhoods needed to be emptied in the capital of Alagoas.

In recent weeks, the risk of mine collapse has become imminent, with around 2 meters of sinking. On December 10, one of the mines under the Mundaú lagoon ruptured, but there was no destruction of the surrounding neighborhoods or the formation of a crater over the city.
