More than 200 workers were rescued in a situation similar to slavery in the interior of Pará during an operation by the Federal Police (PF), the Public Ministry of Labor (MPT) and the Regional Superintendence of Labor. The actions, which took place throughout the week, were released this Saturday (2) by the Federal Police.

In all, five farms were the target of operations called Zacimba Gaba, named after a princess from the Cabinda nation of Angola, who was enslaved in Brazil in the 1690s. Among the people rescued was a 15-year-old teenager.

The workers, who worked on açaí, palm oil and soy plantations, did not have protective equipment or a formalized employment relationship. In addition, they lived in irregular housing, with precarious electrical installations, inadequate bathrooms and no time control. “The working conditions were such that one of the farms was known as ‘Senzala'”, informs the PF.

After rescuing the workers, each of the farms had a person held accountable both in a police investigation and in a MPT procedure.

All workers will be assisted by the Ministry of Labor and the MPT, so that they are compensated and have their labor rights considered. The PF investigations are still ongoing.
