(ANSA) – MILAN, SEPTEMBER 10 – For the Milan Attorney General’s Office, with deputy attorney general Giuseppe De Benedetto, as well as for the defense, Renato Vallanzasca must move from prison to a place of care, under house arrest, given his serious health conditions. In the hearing before the Surveillance Court, which will decide in the next few days, the magistrate, on the basis of medical reports, explained that “the condition of dementia has been ascertained” and “there is a clear incompatibility with detention in prison”. It is “the moment – he added – to modify the condition of detention, to be carried out in the care facility that has made itself available”. Vallanzasca also participated in the hearing, open to the public at the request of the defense attorneys Corrado Limentani and Paolo Muzzi, and behind him was a friend of his, an entrepreneur, volunteer and legal guardian, “a guardian angel” according to the defense attorneys, with his hand resting on his shoulder. Judge Carmen D’Elia reviewed the medical reports, including those from the prison medicine service, which in recent months have given an account of the conditions of the former boss of the Comasina gang and his serious cognitive problems. Conditions that produce “paranoia, nocturnal delusions”, “aphasia” and that have led him to fall out of bed and be hospitalized several times in recent months. “His conditions do not even make him understand the meaning of punishment”, the defense wrote in one of the briefs. A neurologist from the prison medicine service reported at the end of July that his “conditions are hardly compatible with the prison regime”, that the 74-year-old “has completely lost control” and that he must be transferred to a care facility “for Alzheimer’s patients”. The defense found “the largest facility in the Veneto that deals with Alzheimer’s patients, linked to the Church and in the province of Padua”.
