International team to compete against USA
The US joins five of the top 10, including Schaeffler
The ‘Korea’s Four Musketeers’, currently active in the US PGA Tour, will be competing in the Presidents Cup.
Lim Seong-jae (26), Kim Si-woo (29), Kim Joo-hyung (22), and An Byeong-hun (33) will participate as part of the International Team in the tournament to be held at the Royal Montreal Golf Club (par 71) in Montreal, Quebec, Canada for four days starting on the 26th. The Presidents Cup, which began in 1994, is a team competition between the International Team (excluding Europe) and the U.S. Team.
Following the tournament two years ago, four Korean players, the largest number ever, will play in the Presidents Cup for the second consecutive tournament. Lee Kyung-hoon (33), who played in the last tournament, will be absent, and An Byeong-hun will join after five years since the 2019 tournament. Lee Min-woo (26), a Korean-Australian, will also be on the list for the first time. Lee Min-woo is the younger sister of Lee Min-ji, who plays in the US LPGA Tour. A total of 12 players were selected for the International Team, with four Korean players, three from Australia and Canada, and one each from South Africa and Japan.
In the all-time record, the US team has an overwhelming advantage with 12 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss. The International team has not been able to break the 9-game losing streak since the 2003 tournament, which ended in a draw. The US team is expected to be strong in this tournament as well based on objective performance. Five of the top 10 players, including world number 1 men’s golfer Scotty Scheffler (28) and number 2 Xander Schauffele (31), have joined the US team. The only player from the International team to make it to the top 10 is Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama (32), who is ranked 7th.
The International Team needs the Korean players to perform well in order to escape their losing streak. The PGA Tour ranked Im Sung-jae first in the International Team when determining the Power Rankings to predict the performance of the tournament. He was highly evaluated for his performance in the two recent Presidents Cups, where he won five games and drew one in the four-ball (a method in which two players play separately and the team score is determined by the better record at each hole) and singles matches. However, Im Sung-jae faltered in the foursome (a method in which two players alternate hitting one ball) matches, with one draw and three losses. Im Sung-jae, who is about to compete in his third Presidents Cup, expressed his determination, saying, “Since it is a team game, I think teamwork is the most important. It is important to win the first day’s four-ball and earn points.” In addition, Kim Si-woo ranked second in the Power Rankings, Kim Joo-hyung ranked fourth, and An Byeong-hun ranked 11th.
The President’s Cup is played over four days, with five four-ball matches on the first day, five foursomes matches on the second day, four-ball and foursomes matches each on the third day, and 12 singles matches on the final day.
