Monique Medeiros leaving prison in August 2022

The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) defended this Thursday (29) the return of Monique Medeiros, mother of the boy Henry Borel, to preventive detention. The letter was sent to Minister Gilmar Mendes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

Deputy attorney general Juliano Baiocchi Villa-Verde de Carvalho said that Monique’s actions could harm the course of the process. He points out that he cannot observe only the rights and guarantees of the defendant, but the principle of the legal process.

Monique Medeiros is accused of participating in the death of her own son, Henry Borel, aged 4, in March 2021. In addition to her, the boy’s stepfather, former Rio councilor Jairo Souza, known as Jairinho, is also responsible for the crime.

She has been loose since August last year, when she received a habeas corpus from the Superior Court of Justice (STJ). After the decision, the boy’s father, Leniel Borel, filed an appeal with the STF to resume the ex-wife’s arrest.

Monique and Jairinho must go to the popular jury. A trial date, however, has not yet been set.
