Pharma Reveals Promising Research on Kaempferia Extract for Inhibiting COVID Growth

At the 20th National Herb Expo on June 30, 2023, an interesting research project caught the attention of the attendees. The research, titled “Research and development of galingale extract for clinical use for anti-Covid infection,” was presented by Assoc.Prof.Dr. Pisit Khemawut from the Chakrin Naruebodindra Medical Institute, Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University.

The study focused on white galingale, which was found to have anti-infective effects and the potential to help treat COVID. The research revealed that white galingale extract can inhibit the growth of the virus, making it a promising candidate for further development as a drug for COVID-19.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phisit Khemawut emphasized the importance of clinical research in raising the level of herbal medicine. Without clinical data, it is challenging to apply experimental results to other countries where Thai herbs may be unfamiliar. Reliable information meeting international standards is essential to gain credibility for Thai herbs on an international level.

The clinical trial results could have significant benefits. For example, during the ongoing Delta COVID pandemic, hospitals are struggling to accommodate all patients. If research shows that herbs like Andrographis paniculata can help prevent COVID patients from developing pneumonia, it would alleviate the burden on hospitals. Patients would be able to take better care of themselves, reducing the strain on the healthcare system.

However, the research also highlighted some potential issues. In studies on the use of ginger extract, no significant problems were found. However, in the case of galingale extract, it was discovered that consuming excessive amounts of the herb could lead to a side effect of diarrhea due to its carminative effect and stimulation of the gastrointestinal tract. Patients with mild gastrointestinal symptoms or those already ill should be cautious and not overeat the herb, as it may worsen their symptoms.

The research conducted by Pharma offers promising insights into the use of Kaempferia extract and white galingale extract for combatting the growth of COVID. As the development of herbal medicines progresses, it is crucial to ensure reliable data and meet international standards. These efforts will not only benefit patients but also increase the credibility of Thai herbs in the global arena.]
