Improving adherence to pharmacotherapeutic treatment of small patients at the Isidro Ayora Gynecological Obstetric Hospital (HGOIA) in Quito is the objective of the Pharmaceutical Telecare (TAF) of this health home.

Luis Villarroel, Pharmaceutical Biochemist at HGOIA is the creator of this application that allows knowing and determining problems related to drug administration. “With this application we will be able to select the best pharmacotherapy for the newborn” he mentioned. Currently, more than 754 patients in the neonatology area have benefited from this service.

This application allows us to obtain the maximum benefit from pharmacotherapy, since it improves the quality of life of patients and promotes the rational use of medicines, thus avoiding drug interactions, self-medication, unnecessary treatments and frequent hospital admissions.

Pharmaceutical telecare consists of remote pharmaceutical care practice that uses instant messaging applications to complement the face-to-face pharmaceutical care that the patient requires, an option that helps parents and caregivers. The initiative intervenes in three important areas: pharmacotherapeutic follow-up, training and information for patients, and coordination with other personnel who provide medical care to children.

For María Alcívar, mother of one of our patients, this application has helped her keep an eye on her son’s medications and avoid complications in the administration and measurement of each drug that her little one requires daily.

Since the creation of the application, 890 medications have been dispensed and pharmaceutical care has been provided to 754 patients, detecting and avoiding 187 drug interactions, 18 over-dosing, 178 under-dosing and another 86 drug-related problems.

Our health professionals are committed to the quality of care, including technology as a strategic part of connectivity and direct access between users and health personnel.
