Approximately 20% of pharmacies provide advanced services such as therapy monitoring and teleconsultation, 30-35% provide preventive services, such as flu vaccination, 68% deliver medicines at home and 80- 90% perform simple diagnostic tests such as measuring blood pressure or blood sugar. These are some of the data from a survey conducted by Iqvia – a provider of information, data processing and analysis in the healthcare sector – on a sample of about 300 representative pharmacies from the entire national territory to probe which and how many services are offered to citizens.
The pandemic has accelerated the development of the service pharmacy – observes Iqvia in a note – which from a garrison for the dispensing of medicines is increasingly becoming a health outpost in the area. According to Iqvia, for 78% of the population, pharmacies have been a point of reference during Covid, a time when it was difficult to access your doctor. Now the expectation, in the medium term, is that the citizen’s relationship of trust with their pharmacist will be strengthened in the perspective that the pharmacist will increasingly assume a consultancy role, not only in promoting well-being, but also in prevention and monitoring of chronic diseases. The long-term expectation, on the other hand, is that pharmacy consultancy services and digital tools (telemedicine, teleconsultation) will also be developed for monitoring the patient at home.
The legislative decree that kicks off the extended digital prescription for patients with chronic conditions (launched in May 2023) – analyzes Iqvia – will allow the patient, for example, to go directly to the pharmacy for 12 months to dispense drugs without going to the doctor of general medicine for the repetition of the prescription. This will represent a simplification for the patient but a great responsibility for the pharmacist, who will be able to follow the patient with chronic conditions more closely, supporting and monitoring him in the management of therapies.
