The lyrics only make this halo of mystery that surrounds the piece even greater. Collins narrates in In The Air Tonight the story of a reunion that, at first reading, seems to be that of a criminal and the one in charge of bringing him to justice.
Phrases like “I was there and I saw what you did/I saw it with my own eyes/So you can wipe that smile off, I know where you’ve been/It’s all been a pack of lies” sounds far removed from what one might expect from a love song, and for this reason, a dark legend began to pass from mouth to mouth in that decade of the 80s.
