Eagles Acquire Promising Tight End Albert Okwuegbunam from Broncos in Trade

The Philadelphia Eagles wasted no time in securing their desired addition to the team, bypassing the waiver wire process by completing a trade for former Broncos tight end Albert Okwuegbunam on Tuesday. In exchange for Okwuegbunam and a 2025 seventh-round pick, the Eagles gave up a 2025 sixth-round pick.

What caught the Eagles’ attention about Okwuegbunam? General manager Howie Roseman highlighted the tight end’s physical abilities, remarking on his impressive stature at 6-5 and nearly 260 pounds. Additionally, Okwuegbunam possesses remarkable speed, running a 4.4 40-yard dash. Roseman also noted the flexibility and wingspan that make Okwuegbunam a standout player.

Having been a fourth-round pick out of Missouri in 2020, Okwuegbunam quickly made a name for himself with his exceptional size and speed. At the 2020 Combine, he ran a 4.49 40-yard dash at 6-5 and 258 pounds, making him the fastest tight end at the Combine since Evan Engram’s 4.42 in 2017.

During his three years with the Denver Broncos, Okwuegbunam played in 26 games, starting in 7 of them. He recorded a total of 54 receptions for 546 yards and 4 touchdowns. Okwuegbunam’s breakout season came in 2021, where he amassed 33 receptions for 330 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Despite Okwuegbunam’s strong performance, he was not expected to make the Broncos’ final roster. Nevertheless, he concluded the preseason on a high note with an impressive showing in Denver’s 41-0 victory over the Rams, catching 7 of 8 targets for 109 yards and a touchdown.

The Eagles’ decision to trade for Okwuegbunam was driven by their belief in his potential rather than concerns about their existing tight end room. Alongside their acquisition of Albert O, the Eagles opted to retain their other three tight ends: Dallas Goedert, Jack Stoll, and Grant Calcaterra, at least for the time being.

Roseman emphasized that the trade was motivated by the opportunity to add a promising offensive player who could contribute to the team’s success.

In Philadelphia, Okwuegbunam will be coached by the experienced Jason Michael, who has an extensive background as a tight ends coach. The Eagles are excited to work with the young tight end and maximize his potential.
