Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Condemns Deadly University Gymnasium Bombing

A bombing attack on a university gymnasium in the southern Philippines has left four people dead and several others wounded. The explosion occurred at Mindanao State University in Marawi City during a Catholic mass service on Sunday morning.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has condemned the attack, labeling it as a “senseless and most heinous act” perpetrated by foreign terrorists. He has instructed the police and armed forces to ensure the safety of the public in the wake of the tragedy.

Governor Alonto Adiong Jr. of Lanao del Sur province in Mindanao also condemned the “violent bombing”, stating that such terroristic attacks on educational institutions should be condemned as they are places that promote the culture of peace and mold the future shapers of the country.

Mindanao State University expressed deep sadness and disbelief, suspending classes until further notice. They also extended heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families, committing to providing support and assistance to those affected by the tragedy.

Police are currently investigating the explosion, including the possibility that it was carried out by pro-ISIL (ISIS) fighters. Mindanao has been plagued by violence for decades amid a rebellion by armed separatist groups. In 2017, Marawi was the site of an ISIL-inspired siege that killed more than 1,000 people.

While Manila signed a peace agreement with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the largest separatist group, in 2014, smaller separatist groups have continued to carry out attacks across the region, leading to continued instability and tragedy.
