With the baccalaureate reform implemented by Jean-Michel Blanquer, the philosophy test no longer marks the start of an intense week of exams, but the end of two years punctuated by continuous assessment, the anticipated test of French at the end of first year and the specialty tests. The latter, which take place in March of the final year, now mark the highlight of the new formula baccalaureate, accounting for a third of the final grade. So, this Wednesday, June 14, the 536,000 general and technological terminal students go to the philosopher test, once queen, without pressure.
Final year student near Bordeaux, “rather stressed in normal times”, Aurélien (the people cited only by their first name wish to remain anonymous) only opened his philosophy classes on Monday morning to revise. He calculated his average with the notes he has. “If I have zero in philosophy and zero in the oral exam, I still have my baccalaureate”explains the future bachelor, ” honors “ at this stage, “good mention” whatever happens. Another reason for letting go for the high school student: Aurélien accepted a proposal on Parcoursup a week ago. With his specialties in mathematics and earth sciences and life, he enters the scientific preparatory class at the start of the school year. “Since then, it’s like I’ve been on vacation a bit”, relates the future student. He still went to class all the way, but he saw the class become depopulated over the weeks. “Tuesday, June 6, we were sixteen out of thirty-three in philosophy class. Even our teacher seems jaded”is surprised the Bordelais.
The teachers interviewed did not all observe massive absenteeism, but each underlined the “disengagement” students. While this lower investment around philosophy is not new since the new format of the baccalaureate in 2021, it has increased this year, with the effective implementation of the reform, the last two sessions having been disrupted by the Covid-19. For the first time, candidates already know 80% of their grades. “The philosophy test has been emptied of its stake, while this teaching has an important democratic and republican stake”deplores Marie Perret, philosophy teacher in Rueil-Malmaison (Hauts-de-Seine) and president of the Association of Philosophy Teachers in Public Education (Appep).
“Accounting Logic”
The architecture of the final year is in question for philosophy teachers. “The students came back very tired from the specialty tests in March. They were physically and psychologically flushed, which did not help to get them back to work”relate Mme Perret. “They were then monopolized until the beginning of April by the cover letters for Parcoursupexplains the professor. Then, they learned about their specialty notes before going on spring break and, finally, Parcoursup’s proposals arrived, from 1is June. »
