Guatemalan talent transcends borders and this time it will arrive in London thanks to Juan Pablo Mendezand photographer from Quetzaltenangowho was selected among the finalists for the Latin American Prize of the Sony World Photography Awards 2024.
This prestigious recognition opened the doors for him to exhibit the photograph that portrays the singer Aveces María at the exhibition to be held at Somerset House.
The Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition at Somerset House is an annual event bringing together some of the best work from photographers around the world. This historic building, located in the heart of London, becomes the perfect setting to showcase the diversity and excellence in the field of contemporary photography.
From April 19 to May 6, Juan Pablo Méndez’s photography will be on display, sharing space with the works of the talented photographers and visual artists who won first places or were highlighted as finalists in the different competitions organized by the World Photography Organization.
In addition to being presented in the exhibition, Méndez’s work will be immortalized in the official book of the Sony World Photography Awards 2024. This annual publication compiles the winning and finalist works of these awards.
From Quetzaltenango to London
Originally from Quetzaltenango, Juan Pablo Méndez has been forging a notable career in the world of photography and with his achievements he inspires many other Guatemalans.
His ability to tell visual stories and his technical skill have earned him recognition both nationally and internationally.
Inclusion in the Sony World Photography Awards 2024 is an achievement that not only recognizes their individual talent but also places Guatemala’s name on the global map of contemporary photography.

The Quetzaltecan photographer has placed his photographs among the finalists for the Sony World Awards on two occasions.
The first was the work called The Beauty of Northern Ligts above Arctic Henge, which immortalizes Iceland’s Arctic Henge during a night of northern lights. The photograph was positioned among the six finalists of the 2022 Latin American competition.
The most recent is the work in which he portrayed the Quetzaltecan singer Aveces María, this was captured during a lighting workshop he held in his hometown.
