The Alt Empordà and the Baix Empordà have closed the year leading the drop of unemployment in the province of Girona, being the two regions of the demarcation where the percentage of unemployed people has fallen the most. Alt Empordà closed 2021 with 6,175 people unemployed, while this 2023 there were 5,704 people, a drop of 7.6%. As for Baix Empordà, the Girona region ended 2023 with 4,719 people without a job, 6.7% less than last year.

In general terms, the different regions of Girona have ended the year with good unemployment figures compared to the last month of 2022. In La Selva, the unemployed have fallen by 4.1%, figures similar to those in Pla de l’Estany where unemployment has fallen by 3.3%. Below these data is Gironès (-2.1%). However, it is not all good news for Girona. Unemployment has increased in three counties: in Garrotxa, where it has done so anecdotally with more unemployment than a year ago and an increase of 0.05%; and in Cerdanya and Ripollès, where the increase was 3.7% in both regions.

Despite the fact that some of the mountain districts of the province are the ones that have recorded worse data in terms of the variation in the number of unemployed people, they are the demarcations with a lowest unemployment rate on record. In Cerdanya, for example, the registered unemployment rate, which measures the existing relationship between registered unemployment and an approximation of the registered active population, is 4.7%. Low rates have also been recorded in other mountain regions of Girona. In Pla de l’Estany by 6%, in Garrotxa by 6.5% and in Ripollès by 7.1%.

Girona’s economy closes in 2023 creating more than 11,000 jobs

All the regions of Girona are below 10%. The list is completed by Baix Empordà (7.6%); Gironès (8.5%); Alt Empordà (8.7%) and Selva (9.9%). Despite the fact that no county exceeds the double-digit barrier in terms of the registered unemployment rate, some important municipalities in the province do, such as Salt (13.2%), Blanes (12%) or Figueres (11.4%).
