diga di Kakhovka was destroyed on Tuesday 6 June, in the early hours of the morning. The before and after images, published by Maxar and Planet Labs, are impressive and show the territories in the areas surrounding the Kakhovka hydroelectric plant completely flooded.
The dam was part of a hydroelectric power station and was located in the port city of Nova Kakhovka on the Dnipro River, 30 kilometers from Kherson. Before being destroyed it could count on a water basin of 18 million cubic metres, as Andrea Marinelli and Guido Olimpio wrote in the Corriere. It had enormous strategic importance, due to its geographical location. Moreover, its destruction has important military repercussions, mainly because it limits the Ukrainian options for the war counteroffensive.
