Photos of the Jesus of the Fall procession in Antigua Guatemala
The majestic colonial city of Antigua Guatemala was dressed in fervor and devotion in the Fifth Sunday of Lentwhen hundreds of cones and devotees gathered to witness one of the most emblematic processional processions of the season: the procession of Jesus of the Fall.
This moving event, which takes place every year, is a symbol of the deep religious tradition that characterizes the colonial city. The procession, which began around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 17, departed from the San Bartolomé Becerra Temple, marking the beginning of a route that would cover more than 122 blocks throughout the urban area of La Antigua and its surrounding areas, and which ended after more than 20 hours.
What distinguishes this procession is its uniqueness in the change of batches or shifts. At each corner, the cones and devotees carry out a coordinated change of the litters without stopping the movement of the procession, thus creating a continuous back and forth that is both a demonstration of faith and an impressive visual spectacle.
Prior to the start of the procession, devotees gathered at the temple to participate in an emotional mass, marking the beginning of a day full of reflection and spirituality.
Moment of solidarity between cucuruchos
However, beyond the solemnity of the event, there were also moments of solidarity and camaraderie among the cones. A video was shared on social media that captured the spirit of mutual aid among participants, as a group came together to hold the inclined walk and ensure its stability during the ride.
A little history about the procession of Jesus of the Fall
To understand the historical importance of this procession, it is crucial to know a little about its origin. The carving of Jesús Nazareno de la Caída, attributed to the sculptor Pedro de Mendoza in the 17th century, is a relic venerated by generations of faithful.
It was consecrated on April 5, 1984 by Monsignor Ramiro Pellecer and its official march is the impressive “Jesús Nazareno de San Bartolo”, the work of master Manuel Antonio Ramírez Croker.
The procession has its roots in the initiative of the Aguirre Matheu couple, owners of the Retana estate, who in 1902 commissioned their sons Jorge and Carlos to organize the first procession of the Sovereign King and Lord of the Fall. Over the years this event became a prominent event in the religious calendar of Antigua Guatemala, attracting faithful from all over the country and the world.
