This year’s Tyrolean State Prize for Science went to a doctor on Tuesday evening: Herbert Tilg, Director of Internal Medicine I at the Innsbruck Medical University, received the 14,000 euro award, the state announced. The sponsorship award also went to a doctor – this was awarded to Timon Adolph, who is an employee of Tilg. The sponsorship award is endowed with 4,000 euros.

“In recognition of his previous work, which has made a significant contribution to the research and better treatability of intestinal and metabolic diseases, the State of Tyrol is now awarding Herbert Tilg the State Prize for Science”, Tyrol Governor Günther Platter (ÖVP) justified the decision. The award recognizes his “outstanding work in the research of fatty liver diseases and chronic inflammatory bowel diseases”, said Annette Leja (ÖVP), State Minister for Health. Tilg is one of the “most highly cited researchers 2020” and is also a mentor for young scientists.

Herbert Tilg is a specialist in internal medicine and has specialized in the areas of endocrinology, gastroenterology and metabolism during his career. After studying medicine in Innsbruck, he did research in the USA and in 1993 did his habilitation on “Cytokines and Liver Diseases”. Tilg is an additional specialist in gastroenterology and hepatology, oncology and intensive care medicine and was executive senior physician and deputy head of the University Clinic for Internal Medicine in Innsbruck until 2001. From 2002 he headed the Department of Internal Medicine at the Academic Teaching Hospital Hall, in 2012 he was appointed Professor of Internal Medicine with a focus on endocrinology, gastroenterology and metabolism and as Director of the University Clinic for Internal Medicine I at the Medical University of Innsbruck.

The award winner Adolph is a senior physician at the Innsbruck University Clinic for Internal Medicine I. His focus is on research into metabolic inflammation as a cause of gastrointestinal diseases, for example in connection with Chron disease and ulcerative colitis.
