Physicists have uncovered a theoretical process called gravitational reconnection in Einstein’s general relativity equations. Published on October 28, 2026, in Physical Review D, the work reveals how four-dimensional space-time structures could change their connections and transfer energy into matter.
Solar flares and cosmic collisions usually occupy entirely different corners of astrophysics. Physicists Luca Comisso of Columbia University and Felipe A. Asenjo of Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez in Chile published a theoretical framework in Physical Review D demonstrating that gravitational fields might undergo a process resembling magnetic reconnection.
Parallels Between Plasma Physics and General Relativity
In magnetized plasmas like those found in the Sun and interstellar space, magnetic field lines can stretch and twist until they rearrange through a process called magnetic reconnection. This releases stored magnetic energy and drives powerful energetic events. Comisso and Asenjo wanted to know whether gravity could do something similar.
Magnetic reconnection is when these field lines, in some specific configuration, break and reattach in a different configuration. When they break and reconnect, they release energy.
Luca Comisso, Columbia University
To explore this, the researchers expressed Einstein’s general relativity in an alternative mathematical form that resembles equations that describe plasmas. They derived the framework directly from gravitational equations. This approach exposes hidden constraints on how space-time evolves.
Through a new mathematical representation of Einstein’s general relativity, Comisso and Asenjo developed a theoretical model for gravitational reconnection, an event defined by altering how gravitational fields are connected. Their findings appeared on October 28, 2026, within Physical Review D in an article entitled Reconnection of gravitational fields

Gravitational Field Sheets and Flux Freezing
Because space-time operates across four dimensions rather than three spatial dimensions, the geometric structures involved differ from ordinary magnetic field lines. Gravity involves structures that the authors call gravitational field sheets.

Because space-time is four-dimensional rather than three-dimensional, gravity involves something like field ‘sheets’ rather than field lines. Adding one dimension to a line gives you a plane. You can think of it as putting many lines together to form a ‘sheet.’
Luca Comisso, Columbia University
These sheets are mathematical structures used to track how the field is organized as space-time evolves, not physical surfaces. Should the circumstances that maintain their linkages fail, these sheets are capable of reconnecting, which enables the conversion of gravitational field energy into matter.
Applications for Black Hole Mergers
One potential application involves merging black holes, where extreme gravity severely distorts space-time. These newly recognized limits may assist scientists in establishing the mandatory behaviors of gravitational fields without needing to compute the specifics of their entire evolution.

The research builds on earlier research with Maricarmen A. Winkler that identified previously unrecognized constraints on how space-time can evolve. Funded by the National Science Foundation and NASA, the recently elaborated gravitational reconnection is currently a purely theoretical finding, prompting the group to plan future studies on its presence in space environments, its energy-transfer capacity, and its potential to leave observable traces in gravitational waves picked up by tools like LIGO.
