While the world is watching the news that a genetically modified pig’s heart has been tested in humans, the doctor who performed the same surgery a quarter of a century ago is in Assam. Dr. Dhani Ram Barua, a 32 – year – old doctor, implanted a pig’s heart in 1997. The patient, Purno Psyche, who lived for about a week, later died. The doctor who performed the illegal surgery was arrested.
The 72-year-old Dr. Barua has lost the ability to speak after undergoing brain surgery 6 years ago. But relatives and former colleagues say the doctor is happy with the experiment at the Maryland School of Medicine.
