English scientists have found viruses in the feces of some species that can kill the bacteria present in foot ulcers in people with diabetes. The material has been found in animals such as Guinea baboons, lemurs and pigs Visayan.

More than 7,000 amputations, costing millions of pounds, are carried out each year as a result of wounds caused by complications of the diabetes. Treatment is most often not effective, as ulcers are often infected by bacteria that impair healing.

They are also quite resistant to antibiotics, which means they cannot be killed by medicines.

However, viruses contained in animal poop can minimize infection in wounds, say British scientists. They have not yet tested this protocol on the wounds of patients with diabetes, but they are optimistic about this important advance.

Professor Graham Stafford, who leads research into treatment in University of Sheffield, demonstrated enthusiasm for studies. “We have been looking for new treatments for antibiotic resistance for some time, and we are the first to look for this virus in zoo feces.”

Intractable complications of diabetics

Once more research is carried out, the methods could potentially be included in dressings applied to previously intractable diabetic foot ulcers.

There are thousands of different types of bacteriophages, and they are seen as a new frontier in medicine that could also be used to treat sepsis in the future.

So far, researchers have identified useful bacteria in the fecal matter of Guinea baboons, giraffes, lemurs, pigs Visayan and binturongs, which are part of a collection of 450 animals from more than 70 rare and endangered species at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in the United Kingdom.

There are an estimated 4.5 million people with diabetes in the UK. According to researchers, around 450,000 of Britain’s diabetics will develop foot ulcers at some point.
