You have become a regular in the Canary Islands and in recent years you have experienced firsthand not only the evolution of the catwalks but also the professionalization of other companies linked to the sector, from fashion agencies to make-up artists, hairdressers, technicians… How do you assess the current panorama of the fashion industry in the Archipelago?

The potential of the Canary Islands in the world of fashion is tremendous, tremendous, tremendous… I tell you that even we do many productions on the Islands. In fact, the bathroom line of my brand, Palomo Spain, is manufactured entirely in the Canary Islands because there is a very specialized industry, with tremendous quality in the bathroom; that’s why we do everything there. Likewise, they are Islands with some impressive places for productions, campaigns and everything else. It seems to me a super inspiring place where millions of corners are yet to be discovered. Canarias is a place that always gives you more. I was not a regular in the Archipelago but for four or five years I confess that I have fallen in love with the Islands and I always look for an excuse to go there.

Agatha Ruíz de la Prada said a few weeks ago that the Canary Islands, specifically Gran Canaria Moda Cálida, is after the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Madrid, the second best organized catwalk in the country.

That of course. What surprises me a lot is the level so good that there is to discover new talents in fashion. But the same thing also happens with regard to models. The best models currently on the market come from the Canary Islands, and they not only work in Madrid but also in the rest of Europe. The ecosystem that has been generated around all this industrial organization chart is amazing because it has been set up very well. New boys and girls have worked with me who have ended up doing international campaigns for brands such as Dolce & Gabanna, Moschino, Balmain… It really surprises me because there is a lot of freshness, innovative faces that sometimes is what we look for in Madrid and not We found it. Everything is very professional.

Are the catwalks important? I ask because here, in the Canary Islands, perhaps the importance of these appointments as a showcase has not been well understood.

Well look, there is a huge dilemma there. I believe that catwalks are important depending on the product you want to sell and the business expectations of each brand. In the case of Moda Cálida, which is the one I know best, it is profitable for them because, in addition to giving creators visibility, it brings this activity closer to people who come from abroad. Personally, the Canary catwalks interest me because they allow me to feel and understand the profile of the designer; He lets me get into his universe and see the quality of the clothing. Not all catwalks are essential for all brands, but in general I understand them as a form of cinema to get closer to that new part that allows us to better understand the vision of designers.

“The potential of the Canary Islands in the world of fashion is tremendous; you should be looked at with envy”

Do you perceive a genuineness in the Canary Islands when it comes to fashion proposals?

I think so. There is its own style because, above all, each designer and each brand develops in its environment. I am the way I am because I live in Córdoba, in the south of Spain. Here there is another light, the colors are different… And in the Canary Islands there is also a way of dressing that is closely related to the relaxation of its people; they like to be sexy and they don’t mind showing skin or curves or anything. There is absolute freedom and I perceive a concern to demonstrate it. Fashion transmits that stupendous enjoyment of life that is noticeable both when it comes to making clothes and presenting collections as well as when dressing. Funny, sexy, Latina… All of that is very Canarian.

Do we have something to envy from other regions in everything that refers to productions, shootingshairdresser, technicians…?

Fuck! No way!! Not at all. I think that other sites should envy the Canary Islands. I think you have a tremendous pull, which should be noted in the economy because there are many companies and activity in the sector. All the makeup artists, hairdressers or models I have worked with in the Islands are excellent. And what I was saying before, I have also just done a campaign in Lanzarote with my firm, with twelve or thirteen boys and girls from the Archipelago, and they are all gorgeous, fresh, modern… All from Canarian agencies. When you do something in Madrid, you always know what is there and yet in the Canary Islands you find enormous freshness.

“The level of agencies, models, production, hairdressing or makeup is very surprising”

There is also what I was saying before about the totally different environments offered by the different locations. In the Canary Islands you can do from an editorial inspired by a completely arid space, such as the dunes of Maspalomas, like you can go to another completely green place or a volcanic landscape that has nothing to do with the others. In that sense, the work carried out in production agencies is excellent.

I think that his brand, Palomo Spain, is one of the ones that works the most in the Canary Islands, where he has carried out campaigns and a fashion show, such as the one he organized in Sioux City, in Playa del Inglés (Gran Canaria), to present his collection of glasses. for Multiópticas.

Yes, yes… And I hope to return soon to do more things. I already told you: the Canary Islands in that sense have nothing to envy other places.

Do you think that supporting and betting decisively on new designers is important when it comes to promoting the fashion sector?

I think if. I always say that we must be close and very aware of what young people are doing because, really, they are the ones who are closest to what is happening. You have to give them their place, help them and support them; watch them very carefully. There must be a firm commitment on the part of the institutions but it is also necessary to know how to capture the support of the people of the land. In Madrid I always go to the shows of young designers with more curiosity because it is where I see the most interesting things. It is in the collections of new creators where I generally find more inspiration because they are made with all the illusion in the world and little vision of reality. They are developed with absolute freedom seeking to attract and please the public; they want to impress the viewer without regard to the need to be liked by the industry. Of course they have to have a place in all these initiatives and you have to give all possible support to the young promises.

“Freedom and the way people live in the Canary Islands is noticeable when it comes to dressing and designing”

Listen, a 31-year-old person is telling me about supporting young promises in the world of fashion. You are not an old gentleman either.

Even I am already old (laughs). That’s the truth.

Isn’t that youthful freshness that you tell me sometimes erased by reality with a slap in the face when they discover what an industry as capricious as fashion really is like?

Man, it depends on how lucky you are and it also depends on the business option that each brand has. It’s not that reality slaps you in the face, but young boys should know that they learn from successes and mistakes. I think that it is at that initial moment when it is time to make mistakes and when it is time to learn. I already told you that it is important depending on the business expectations that each one has. It is true that reality can slap you in the face, but I would tell them not to take it the wrong way, but to help them learn not to give up and, above all, to stand firm in what they want to convey.

They say that only those who do things are wrong.

Exactly. That’s a perfect way to sum it up: only those who do things are wrong. There’s no more.
