Director Kim Han-gyeol of the movie ‘Pilot’ praised Jo Jung-seok’s genius talent.

In an interview with News 1 about the movie “Pilot” held at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul on the 23rd, director Kim Han-gyeol said about lead actor Jo Jung-seok, “The drama ‘Jealousy Incarnate’ was what made me like Jo Jung-seok as an actor. I don’t usually watch dramas in full, but I remember watching the whole thing in one sitting.”

He continued, “More than anything, what really caught my eye was how well he used his body. The part where he used his body well was impressive,” and “I thought he was a very smart and witty actor because he filled in the gaps between his lines with words and didn’t fill in the blanks with facial expressions. While working together on ‘Pilot,’ I thought he was someone who could delicately express deep human emotions, deepening emotions.”

‘Pilot’ is a work planned by director Han Jun-hee and CEO Kim Myung-jin, who are co-CEOs of the production company Shortcake, and is based on the Swedish film ‘Cockpit’. During the planning process of the film, Jo Jung-seok was cast first, and later, director Kim Han-gyeol joined as a director.

When director Kim Han-gyeol said that he “started the casting with a silver spoon in his mouth” because Jo Jung-seok’s appearance was already confirmed before deciding on the production, he replied, “I definitely felt a lot of pressure, but I couldn’t let a good opportunity slip away. I made the film with the thought that I would make a good film with good people using this difficult opportunity.”

The satisfaction with Jo Jung-seok’s acting only grew on set and after seeing the final product. Director Kim said, “Later, when I saw it on the monitor, at the preview, and in the finished product, I felt that (Jo Jung-seok’s) Jung-woo’s transformation and the difference from when he was Jung Mi-il were so meticulously acted that even his appearance looked different. Whenever Jung-woo appeared, he looked like a completely different person.” He continued, “I personally thought that was refreshing and I thought he acted comfortably, but I thought that wasn’t the case. I thought he paid a lot of attention to detail in every gesture and voice.”

Jo Jung-seok’s acting was also fun to watch on set. Director Kim Han-gyeol said, “People who worked with me didn’t believe it, but I don’t laugh easily, but it was his witty interpretation that made me laugh,” and “If he had just implemented it exactly as it was in the script, I wouldn’t have laughed, but I thought acting was a fun field because he implemented just one line (of dialogue) in such a different and charming way, and it was so funny that I laughed so hard I almost suffocated, and when I laugh a lot, I cry. I remember crying a lot on set.”

‘Pilot’ is a comedy film that depicts what happens after ‘Han Jeong-woo’ (Jo Jung-seok), who suddenly becomes unemployed from being a star pilot, undergoes a drastic transformation and succeeds in finding a new job. Director Kim Han-gyeol, who debuted with the film ‘The Most Ordinary Romance’ (2019), presents a new film with this film after about 5 years.

Meanwhile, ‘Pilot’ will be released on July 31st.
