A tragic aviation incident unfolded in Titusville on Monday morning when a small, four-seat plane went down just short of the local airport property. The aircraft struck electrical infrastructure before hitting the ground and catching fire, prompting an extensive emergency response that closed a major thoroughfare and disrupted power across parts of the city.
Fatal Crash Near Space Coast Regional Airport
The aircraft involved was identified as a Mooney M20F, according to federal investigators. The plane had just departed from Space Coast Regional Airport when the pilot encountered trouble aloft. Preliminary information gathered by the National Transportation Safety Board indicates that the aircraft suffered an engine failure shortly after takeoff, leading the pilot to attempt a left turn in an effort to return to the runway.
Those efforts fell short when the airplane struck power lines and trees near the airfield. Witnesses reported that the aircraft hit the electrical wires before crashing onto the roadway along Columbia Boulevard, also designated as State Road 405, positioned between Sisson Road and South Washington Avenue. The impact resulted in a fierce fire that consumed the aircraft on the pavement just north of the airport.
Emergency dispatchers received initial calls reporting the aircraft emergency at 10:16 a.m., according to the Titusville Fire Department’s response timeline. Fire units arrived on the scene within four minutes to find the plane fully engulfed in flames with downed power lines blocking the area. Firefighters, with assistance from the airport’s dedicated crash crew, extinguished the blaze by 10:25 a.m., but discovered the sole occupant deceased one minute later.
