Eighteen people died when a Saurya Airlines plane crashed during takeoff in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, on Wednesday. The pilot was the only one rescued alive, and he was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.

On Thursday, Nepal’s aviation authorities reported that the pilot is still hospitalized but that his condition is improving.

Among the 19 people on board were two cabin crew members and 17 flight technicians. They were heading to the Nepalese city of Pokhara to repair another plane, according to an official.

The flight recorder and remains of the aircraft have been handed over to a group that will investigate the cause of the accident. The Nepalese aviation industry has long struggled with poor safety, and the EU has imposed a ban on flights from Nepalese airlines in its airspace.
