Because it’s not enough that we have to deal with blemishes on the face, décolleté or back from time to time, nasty pimples can also form on the scalp. If the skin under your hair feels tight or itchy, it doesn’t always have to be annoying dandruff. Read the article to find out how pimples appear on the scalp and how to treat them.

Anyone who has ever felt the skin tense or small bumps when combing their hair has probably also had to deal with a pimple on their scalp. These tend to occur here just as often as at other head locations. If they occur more often, it is also referred to as scalp acne. Dermatologist Dr. Timm Golüke explains what’s behind it.

This is what causes scalp acne

Even though the head is covered with hair, there is also sensitive skin underneath that needs to be cared for like other areas of skin and has its small problem areas: Pimples can therefore appear on the scalp as well as on the face or back. Medically, scalp acne is called “folliculitis,” as dermatologist Dr. Golüke reveals. This causes small hair follicles to become inflamed. “Roughly speaking, it is an inflammation of the hair root,” says the doctor. Pimples often appear when the scalp is very greasy. Most of the time they are not visible at first glance, but are only noticed when combing or when they cause pain and the skin becomes tense. Later they can have a scaly to reddish appearance.

Causes of pimples on the scalp

“Scalp acne occurs when the so-called small hair follicles become inflamed. These are small pimples on the scalp. If you scratch these up, they spread through the hair and can multiply.” Basically, pimples appear on the scalp just like on other areas of the skin. The pores become clogged with dead skin cells or sebum. However, other circumstances can also promote the formation of pimples on the scalp: “Excessive hair care, such as hair oils or excessive sweating, can worsen the symptoms,” says Dr. Golüke. In the same way, old styling products can build up on the scalp and clog the pores. Other triggers for pimples on the scalp include:

Hormonal disorders or illnesses such as PCOS syndrome Taking certain medications or the birth control pill Stress A diet that is too heavy on dairy products

This is how you can treat pimples on your scalp

Basically, pimples on the scalp are relatively easy to treat. In extreme cases, the dermatologist recommends using sebum-reducing or drying shampoos. These remove excess oils and skin cells and allow the scalp to breathe better.

However, it is often enough to adjust your hair care routine. For example, you shouldn’t wash your hair too often: ironically, the hair dries out more quickly and, conversely, becomes greasy again more quickly. This is how the sebum collects on the scalp and causes pimples to form. Massaging the scalp can also help, especially if you use a mask with salicylic or hyaluronic acid.

If none of this helps, Dr. If in doubt, go to a dermatologist. With this you can then find an antibiotic solution to combat pimples on the scalp.

You should also keep this in mind

Pimples on the scalp are just as normal as on other parts of the body and are therefore nothing to worry about. However, you should definitely be careful not to squeeze the small pimples. If fluid escapes and spreads through the hair, the skin impurities can spread further and become inflamed. Also, don’t be too rough with your hair: be careful when brushing, especially, and avoid using too many styling products.

Pimples on the scalp can often be easily prevented. Small lifestyle changes are usually enough to adequately care for the sensitive skin under the mane. Just cleaning your hairbrush or changing your pillowcase regularly can do wonders. The following applies to the upcoming cold season: Leave caps and hats away from time to time so that the scalp can breathe best.
