The director of «Back to the Future» refers to the classic Disney rather than to Collodi’s book
Geppetto’s house in Robert Zemeckis’ “Pinocchio” is an open space full of cuckoo clocks, desired by the bourgeois of the place in the mood for traffic and business, which recall the successes of the Disney house, from Dumbo to Toy Story, already Pixar era , and it’s a beautiful picture of cinematic memories. The new reduction is not so much of Collodi’s 1883 book always so dear to the cinema – just think of Comencini’s masterpiece for TV and another Netflix by Guillermo Del Toro will soon arrive with Ewan McGreg grillo, Christopher Waltz Volpe, Tilda Swinton fata and Turturro Mastro Ciliegia – but is inspired by the Disney cartoon of 1940, one of the least worn by use also in home video.
The director of “Back to the future” can only follow his well-known space-time inputs, adding characters (Fabiana, Geppetto’s assistant and the irrelevant gull Sofia), takes away the highlight of the sowing of gold coins, enjoys modifying vices: beer instead of cigars in the country where Candlewick and the boys are transformed into donkeys and reduces the Cat and the Fox to supporting actors. She is in a bit of a hurry throughout the story, starting with the Fairy neither blonde nor blue but singing (live Cynthia Erivo, British star of Nigerian origin who sings “When you wish upon a star”) but then fires her immediately.
It ends up in the belly of the whale, but without ever insisting on horror, after a melvillian aquatic scene. Shot with the mixed technique of “live action” (fate suffered by all the classics, from the Lion King to the Jungle Book, from Aladdin to the 101 Dalmatians) with stop motion effect, the film pays homage to the Disney cult, not one of the most beloved of the stable, he guesses some classic style character actors, such as the Talking Cricket certified copy, soul and conscience of the story and finally calls Giuseppe Battiston from Italy with a baritone voice to impersonate Mangiafuoco, without enhancing him too much.
The puppet’s redemption wakes up late that he would like, but who knows if he can, become live too, some passages with school books are restricted (from which he is thrown out because different from children) but the arrival in the Land of toys in a carousel carousel is a nice coup de theater serpentine of bad boys with a vocation of teddy boys who will sink into hell blown by creatures of hideous black vapor that spreads like mephitic gas in the air. And perhaps Pinocchio remains wooden to defend the different cartoons including Peppa Pig.
