A flamed pizza caused a fire on Friday night (21) in a restaurant in Madrid, which left two dead and twelve injured, six of them in serious condition, authorities reported this Saturday (22).
Two of those attended by the Samur emergency services in Madrid “died”, said Montse Marcos, supervisor of that institution.
In addition, twelve people were injured by the flames and by the large amount of smoke caused by the fire, which spread very quickly through the Italian restaurant located in the west of the Spanish capital, said the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida.
Six people remain hospitalized due to the seriousness of their injuries, one of them “in a more critical situation” and the others “in a stable situation”, the mayor told journalists at the scene of the fire.
According to the first hypotheses, the fire is due “to a flambéed pizza, which could have set fire to the decoration of the place”, some plastic flowers that adorned the ceiling and columns of the restaurant, said Martínez-Almeida.
“One of the employees was going to give the final touch to a dish with a blowtorch to flambé it, he had the plate on fire in one hand and the blowtorch in the other, he passed close to a column with plants and in a matter of seconds he burned everything” , said a customer, Ruth, to the Spanish newspaper El País.
The two dead due to the accident at the restaurant, at that time occupied by about 30 people, including customers and employees, are a local worker and a customer, according to the mayor.
“It was very lucky due to the proximity of the fire station”, located just a few hundred meters from the restaurant, which allowed “the fire to be put out in less than ten minutes from the first warning”, he continued.
