On October 5, the ‘2024 Tuntun Pet Festa’ was held at Dongtan Yeoul Park in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do. Sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Hwaseong City, and the Korea Dog Association, and hosted by Dong-A Ilbo and Channel A, numerous pet owners, including residents of nearby Dongtan, who came out to enjoy the autumn sunshine with their pets, participated. This event will be held until October 6th.

The event on this day was crowded with citizens who visited with their pets. Various pet-related organizations and companies, including Calvin University’s Department of Animal Animal Studies, Cheongeum, a law firm specializing in pet cases, and Pet Coordination Design Research Institute, attended and filled the booth. In addition to various experiential programs such as making pet waste bags, awareness necklaces, and message keyrings, booths for pet-related counseling programs such as grooming, problem behavior, law, and health were the main attractions.

At 11 a.m., the Tuntun Pet Festa began with a dog show. Trainer Lee Do-kyung and mixed dog Beta (4) performed a frisbee performance together. Cheers erupted as the beta stepped on the trainer’s back and snatched the discus. At 1 p.m., an event was held where the audience could visit in person. It is a so-called ‘come contest’ in which dogs compete by measuring the time they take to run to their owner’s call from a distance. Puppies that did not budge despite their owner’s calls or headed in the wrong direction appeared, bringing laughter to the audience. The honor of first place went to 6-year-old Porky. Mr. Kim (32), Porky’s pet, laughed and said, “Forky usually listens well and runs fast, so I entered the race thinking he would take first place.”

A variety of booths, including caricatures and health checkups, received positive response.

Among the various experience booths, drawing caricatures of dogs drew the most response from last year. There was a long line throughout the event. Mr. Hwang (42), who visited the event with his 11-year-old poodle, said, “I waited for 30 minutes in the hot sunlight, and I am happy to see a cute caricature.” The pet health checkup booth run by veterinarian Park So-young was also bustling with 32 people visiting in just two hours. Veterinarian Park So-young said, “We provided consultations for dogs of various ages, from 1 to 11 years old. To maintain your dog’s health, visit the hospital once a month to check its health and communicate with other dogs and people through regular walks.” “It is important to reduce stress and develop social skills by being able to do it,” he emphasized.

At the Tungun Pet Festa, a pet-related job counseling center was also opened. As the number of pet families increases, pet-related businesses are on the rise. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the domestic pet market is worth 8 trillion won by 2022. Accordingly, the number of people seeking jobs related to companion animals is increasing. People of various ages, including those in their 20s as well as middle-aged people, visited the booth. Kim Jeong-yeon, a professor of companion animal science at Calvin University, said, “We provide guidance on not only certifications related to well-known occupations such as hairdressers and trainers, but also a variety of occupations that even middle-aged people can pursue, such as animal therapists and pet sitters.”

On the afternoon of the 5th, a special lecture was held on proper walking for pet owners and their dogs. Park Hyo-jin, a professor of companion animal science at Calvin University, explained how to deal with cases such as when a pet runs ahead of its owner and when the pet barks at other dogs or people. In addition, you can also find booths where you can hear various information such as pet-related supplies, pet snacks, and pet insurance. The Strong Pet Festa runs until 6pm on October 6th. Admission is free.
