Danny Jansen (29, Boston) became the first player in the 148-year history of Major League Baseball (MLB) to play for both teams in one game. Jansen is a player who is familiar to domestic fans, having served as Ryu Hyun-jin’s (37, Hanwha) ‘dedicated catcher’ when he played in Toronto.

Jansen was named the starting catcher for the opposing team Toronto in the first game of the home series on the 27th. Then, after confirming that Dalton Bashaw (28) would come in as a pinch hitter during his turn at bat, he sat behind home plate as Boston’s replacement catcher and played the rest of the game.

This happened because the game started on June 27. Jansen, who was Toronto’s 7th batter at the time, came to the plate in the top of the 2nd inning with one out and a runner on first base, with the two teams tied 0-0. The first pitch was foul. From then on, the rain started to fall heavily. The umpires waited for 1 hour and 48 minutes before finally declaring the game suspended.

And 61 days later, the game was held again. A suspended game is one that must be continued as it was when it was suspended. The problem was that Jansen had been traded to Boston in the meantime. Jansen, who had played 14 games in a Boston uniform, could not play as a Toronto player again. So Toronto used Basho as a pinch hitter when Jansen was batting. Boston also made a player change, taking out Reese McGuire (29), who had been sent down to a minor league Triple-A team, and putting Jansen in the catcher position.

“Baseball is such an old game and with all the things that happen, I’m just amazed that I’m the first player to do this,” Jansen said after Toronto’s 4-1 win. “It’s amazing and exciting to have the opportunity to be a part of such great sporting history.”
