Fans of mobile games and cool gadgets have no doubt seen the Playdate reviews online last week. Panic’s beautiful bounce controller is a celebration of the simpler playtimes and we were lucky enough to get one early on – we I found it to be a delicious little yellow system, which brings us back “to a time when mobile gaming was a simpler and more innocent pastime, and each new experience was new and exciting”.

In addition to the new games that come with it, Playdate is also an open platform with developers of all sizes able to create and distribute easy-to-download software. One of these programs is PlaynoteStudioA great little app for anyone who is bored of the Nintendo DSi’s awesome simple animation tool, Flip Note Studio.

While the Nintendo animation app can’t be downloaded these days, flipbook-style short artifacts created with Flipnote Studio can be viewed on Playdate using software from developer James Daniel. The app builds on the web player precedent and uses a console arm to allow you to move forward and backward through the animation frames.

Nintendo’s Flipnote apps have attracted a loyal and passionate following and continue to elicit passions to this day. The April Fools’ Day 2020 prank that “leaked” a copy of the Switch has caused huge amounts of fan anger directed at scammers. In the same year, a fan revealed a stunning 34-minute animation that was meticulously created in Flipnote Studio 3D, the 3DS version. Yes, it’s dedication, right there!

You can head over to playnote.studio for more information on how to download the app on Playdate and enjoy Flipnotes at your leisure.

Downloading the app on our Playdate? What if you are not in distribution group 1? “Ah, although we may only have one play date in the Nintendo Lite towers, some of us on the NL team have some waiting time for personal play dates to be sent in. In the meantime, we’ll download and install the app, set it up, and wait for it to go through some paper options.
