The PlayStation Network suffered a multi-hour global outage on July 24, 2026, disrupting account management, digital game access, and major online testing events like Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls. The disruption immediately reignited fierce consumer debate over Sony’s controversial decision to phase out physical discs by January 2028.
Global Outage Knocks Out Online Services and Disrupts Game Betas
Tens of thousands of players worldwide discovered they could not launch digital games, connect to network features, or access basic storefronts when the PlayStation Network went offline. According to Down Detector, which tracks outages, tens of thousands of people reported problems globally with the service. The outage affected gamers’ ability to launch games, apps, or network features on their PlayStation.
The timing dealt a direct blow to players attempting to participate in the highly anticipated open beta for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, which was set to begin that day. With PSN down, PlayStation players were unable to check out the PlayStation 5 console-exclusive title.
“We’re aware that some PlayStation players are experiencing login and network issues,” the Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls X account posted this morning. “Our team is actively investigating the problem and working to identify the cause. We’ll share updates as soon as we have information.”

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls X account
Developer Arc System Works had just revealed that Phoenix Cyclops will be the first DLC character to hit Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, but the network issues were out of its hands. PlayStation services began to disappear for some users around 8:30 a.m. Eastern, around the same time as an alert from Amazon Web Services that multiple AWS servers in the US-WEST-2 region were facing connectivity issues. Despite the problem being marked as resolved around an hour later, players reported continued issues in the hours since, and in countries outside the U.S., too. Downdetector also showed more than 500 complaints as of 2:30 p.m., with users having problems playing games, connecting to servers, or signing in.
A Timely Flashpoint in the Battle Over Physical Media
Because the network failure arrived just weeks after Sony announced that it is ceasing production of physical discs for new games in January 2028, the downtime transformed from an ordinary technical glitch into a fierce debate over the future of digital-only game ownership. During PSN outages such as this, a physical disc often ensured players could at least access offline-playable content stored on the disc, while some digital games, even single-player ones, require an online check to play, leaving players unable to access those games when PSN is down. The outage prompted some to highlight their concerns around Sony’s plans to no longer release new PlayStation games on discs from January 2028. Sony said in a blog post earlier this month that new games would still be able to be bought in shops, but they would come with a digital code.

Recovery Status and Ongoing Storefront Bottlenecks
After being down for roughly eight hours, the majority of PlayStation Network services came back online. Sony’s PlayStation Service Status page reported that all services are up and running and that issues related to the PlayStation Store had been resolved. IGN reported that players had returned to playing their games. Sony updated its status page to reflect that account management, gaming and social, PlayStation Video, and PlayStation Direct services were back up and running. The page noted that players might still have difficulty getting products on the PlayStation Store, but Sony stated it was working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Sony has not clarified what caused the lengthy PSN outage.
