On September 25, the Plaza Guatemala in the Dominican Republica space that highlights the ties of brotherhood between both nations. Located in front of the Caribbean Sea, this place stands out for its beautiful sculpture of a Quetzalnational bird and national symbol of Guatemala, and for offering a meeting point for the Guatemalan community on the Caribbean island.

The inauguration event was attended by figures such as the mayor of Santo Domingo, Carolina Mejía, and the Guatemalan ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Javier Zepeda, who were accompanied by various authorities and members of the Guatemalan community residing in the country. The inauguration of Plaza Guatemala has a special meaning as it coincides with the first anniversary of the brotherhood agreement signed between the cities of Saint Dominic y Antigua Guatemala.

A space dedicated to Guatemala in the Caribbean

The Republic Square Guatemala is located in the Malecon Promenade of Santo Domingoan emblematic place in the Dominican capital, which combines the natural beauty of the Caribbean coast with recreational and leisure areas for the public. This boardwalk was renovated in December 2023, and now includes various attractions such as a go-kart track, viewing platforms, children’s play areas, an amphitheater and picnic areas, making it an attractive space for locals and visitors alike. .

In addition to the sculpture of the Quetzal, the flags of Guatemala and the Dominican Republic fly in this space, reflecting the friendship between both peoples. The place also has benches for rest and a commemorative plaque that indicates the name of the square.

Other spaces dedicated to our country in the Dominican Republic

Plaza Guatemala is not the only place in Santo Domingo where our country has a presence. Over the years, the Guatemalan community has had meeting points such as the Quetzal Square located between 27 de Febrero and Winston Churchill avenues, a place that has witnessed numerous patriotic celebrations by the chapines residing in the country. In this space, a sculpture of our national bird has also been seen for several years, being a symbol of the presence of the Guatemalan community in Santo Domingo.
