Pork is considered the most favorite food ingredient of Koreans. According to the Korea Rural Economic Institute, pork consumption per person last year was 30.1kg, overwhelmingly more than chicken (15.7kg) and beef (14.8kg). The most preferred part of pork is definitely ‘samgyeopsal’. According to statistics, pork belly consumption alone reaches 12kg. Considering that one pig produces about 10kg of pork belly, this is a huge amount of consumption.
Thanks to this, Samgyeopsal is easily available through various channels. If you find a restaurant, you can eat it right away, and it is distributed through markets, marts, and even online, so it can be quickly put on the table at any time.
However, pork belly purchased directly faces limitations in terms of storage and container disposal. In hot weather like these days, it is burdensome to expose it to room temperature during transport due to concerns about spoilage. In addition, most raw meat distributed is packaged in Styrofoam, which is fatal to the environment.
Recently, Dodram’s ‘Candon’ is a unique product that has given a fresh shock to the pork belly distribution market. Pork is usually packaged in square packs, but this company is the first in the livestock industry to use a can-shaped container. The shape of the product is designed in the shape of pork belly. Candon uses a type with the English word (CANDON) engraved in typography on a white and red background and uses pork marbling as a signature pattern. Another meticulous consideration is that you can check the freshness with your own eyes through the transparent window at the bottom of the container.
In fact, the evaluations of acquaintances who first encountered Candon were unanimous. First, they highly praised the fact that it is easy to store. If you cannot eat meat all at once, it is difficult to prevent spoilage without dividing it, but this product can save you that trouble. Another advantage was that it is in the form of a plastic can, so it can be recycled without waste disposal.
The 500ml beer can is tightly packed with 300g of pork belly. I took them out one by one and there were twenty-four pieces. The number of pieces may vary depending on the shape of the meat. The color is nice and pink, and the ratio of lean meat is just right, making my mouth water just looking at it. All six cans I received had a consistent meat and fat ratio, so I trusted the quality. I was worried that I would receive lean pork belly, but the contents were top-notch. Since it is packed with raw meat, the expiration date is short at 10 days.
Cooking is simple. Five minutes is enough. Place the meat on a heated pan and turn it over 2-3 times to cook it, and you will have golden brown pork belly. Since it is bite-sized, there is no need to prepare it separately. With just one can, you can have a much more nutritious and convenient meal than delivery food that takes a long time or instant food with various seasonings.
The taste is superb. The soft texture of the meat and the rich flavor of the fat made me want to keep eating it. The meat surface thickness is not too thin and is evenly sliced at 12mm, so the texture is good. The thickness of the pork belly is a joint work of Dodram’s PR, planning, and production teams. They agreed that the pork belly should be cut into bite-size pieces, and that a thickness slightly thicker (12mm) than the pork belly for home use (10mm) would be the most suitable for the Candon project. This was directly reflected in the final product.
Compared to other parts, pork belly is rich in vitamin B, high-quality protein, phosphorus, potassium, iron, and other minerals. It not only helps skin health but also helps children grow and develop. In addition, the iron found in pork is known to have a high absorption rate in the body, preventing iron deficiency anemia.
There are also research results showing that pork fat is effective in detoxifying heavy metals. The Korea Food Research Institute investigated the blood heavy metal concentrations of factory workers who ate pork 2-3 times a week for 6 weeks. As a result, lead was observed to decrease by about 2% and cadmium by about 8% before and after consuming pork. The research team analyzed that the unsaturated fatty acids in pork combined with harmful substances accumulated in the organs or inside the body and excreted them. However, excessive consumption is not good. About 57% of pork fat is unsaturated fatty acids, but the remaining 38% is composed of saturated fatty acids.
The price of Dodram Candon (11,900 won) is somewhere between that of restaurants and distribution channels. In marts and butcher shops, the price varies depending on supply and demand, but Candon is a uniform price. If you take advantage of a discount event, you can buy it for even cheaper.
Candon was sold at Dodram Mall and Naver Brand Store, and then expanded to convenience stores such as E-Mart 24 and GS25. It is also sold at Coupang, which offers same-day delivery. Currently, the supply is so insufficient that it cannot keep up with demand. Canned pork belly gained great popularity among consumers who enjoy camping and traveling as soon as it was released. Various SNS and online communities are trending on the culture of taking certification shots after purchasing candon.
According to Dodram, the initial stock of 4,000 Candons sold out within ten days of their launch on June 3. Dodram has now more than doubled its Candon production. Candons will expand its product line to include pork neck and seasoned meat in the future.
Park Gwang-wook, chairman of Dodram Pig Farming Cooperative, said, “In the midst of the recent economic downturn and other difficulties in the pork market, we are striving to provide new experiences to consumers through unique product development and marketing targeting the MZ generation.” He added, “We will continue to develop diverse products that reflect consumers’ lifestyles and establish ourselves as a specialized food company that leads the trend of even more delicious food culture.”
