Plug-in solar panels have gone on sale in Great Britain for the first time, opening up renewable energy generation to renters and flat occupants who lack roof access. The new equipment became legal to use across England, Wales, and Scotland following the introduction of rules permitting their sale.
Plug-In Balcony Solar Panels Arrive in Great Britain
The DIY systems are designed to be plugged directly into a standard wall socket or three-pin outdoor socket to generate solar power from a balcony, terrace, garden, fence, or shed roof. The electricity flows straight into a property’s electrical circuit to run household appliances, reducing the amount of power homes need to draw from the National Grid.

Argos became the first retailer to offer the plug-in solar systems, with rival retailers including Amazon, Currys, B&Q, and Screwfix also stocking or expected to stock the panels. EcoFlow and British brand UKSOL are among the suppliers offering the technology, with UK solar company UKSOL pricing its initial kits starting from £599 and £999, while other systems on the market range from about £400 to nearly £700 depending on capacity.
Financial Savings and Payback Periods
Government data and industry estimates indicate that a typical UK home using the plug-in technology can save between £70 and £110 a year on annual electricity bills. Because initial system costs generally run between £400 and £600, experts calculate that households will take about four to six years to break even.

With solar panels commonly carrying a 15-year lifespan, households could secure approximately nine to 10 years of savings after recovering their initial investment. However, financial returns depend heavily on weather conditions, the orientation of the panels—with an unshaded, south-facing spot performing best—and whether residents consume the electricity while it is being generated.
Because plug-in batteries were not included in the legislation allowing the sales to begin, the electricity must be used immediately. Households with daylight energy use, such as running a fridge, freezer, or computer, benefit the most. Any excess power flows back to the grid, though homes are unlikely to receive cash payments for it because the portable kits do not require certification under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme and typically will not qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee.
Safety Considerations and Grid Registration
Safety experts and consumer groups have urged buyers to take proper precautions before purchasing and installing plug-in solar panels. Luke Osborne from Electrical Safety First advised that consumers must avoid using extension leads or travel adaptors, which can become overloaded and overheated.
Experts also noted that older electrical systems and domestic junction boxes may lack the correct components for a two-way electrical flow, meaning buyers should seek professional advice if they are unsure whether their home electrics are suitable. Emily Seymour, energy editor at the Which? consumer group, pointed out that residents may also need planning permission or the consent of a building owner before proceeding.
Additionally, users must register each solar system with the power network. Great Britain’s National Energy System Operator utilizes the registrations to track the cumulative impact of the panels and assess how they cut the need for gas-fired power or imports.
